Do You See What I See?

Do You See What I See?

When you think of someone you know, someone you've known for a while and you envision their face in your mind, what do you see? Do you see what I see? Or, do you see a different side of this person than others around you would see?

When my grandma (Oma) turned 91 we captured some beautiful headshot portraits of her to freeze the memories of this momentous time. But, while sorting through the images I found myself asking this question.

Which side of grandma do I relate to in my memories of her?

While going through the images I came across the above pose of my grandma and realized...this is how I know her!-WHY?

Seems a bit funny asking which side of someone you relate to.

It's not like we have multiple personalities. OR DO WE??? 😳😜

My mom, dad, sisters, cousins, other family and yes even my Oma herself would all choose a different image. One they would relate to, and that's what got me thinking...

When they see Oma in their minds eye, how do they envision her or remember her? Is it different than my remembrance of her? YES, I do believe it is!

This is one specific reason portrait photography is so important and wonderful. 😍 Capturing beautiful images is a given necessity, but what about the personal interactions with the subjects? Does a photographer need to help the subject and work with the subjects? Or, do the subjects need to come prepared to model and be ready to express themselves in front of an impersonal camera lens without any guidance from the photographer?

A skilled portrait photographer should be capable enough to cajole and entice their subjects and HELP REVEAL their personalities for the camera! 🤣😃😊

While thinking through this and chatting with my mom about these portraits I realized the difference of how I see my grandma and how influential I am during portrait sessions to bring out all my subjects personalities and characteristics. This means it is VERY IMPORTANT for a portrait photographer to spend time getting to know their subjects and building a relationship with them. This will help the photographer know how and when to bring out different facial reactions and body language emotions.

You see, whenever my grandma and I are around each other we're jesting, bantering and playfully making witty remarks to each other. We're trying to elicit a response or laughter from the other. So, out of the 3 images above I relate to the one in the middle because she's usually walking up to me with an expectant chuckle on her face.

Of course, she looks beautiful in all 3 images and, each image tells us a uniquely different story of who she is!😇

Naturally, Oma would choose the image on the left because of how inviting she might see herself, while others may choose the one on the right. You see, Oma is very German and has the tendency to be blunt in her interactions with others. So, some may see the standoffishness in the right image (body language) as the best depiction of who she is if they don't know her very well. While others who've taken the opportunity to understand her and know her will see her inviting character on the right as the best description. And as I've said I relate to the 1st image of the post and the middle image of the 3.

Do you have multiple personalities? 😳🤪

Do you have someone in your life like my grandma (Oma) and you wish you had a photographer who was capable of not just capturing a quality image, but also able to capture the personalities of your loved one(s)?

Hello mums, we want to take a moment to let you know our appreciation for you and how AMAZING you are!

YOU ARE THE GLUE THAT HOLDS THE FAMILY TOGETHER! 😍🙏🏼

The above statement is much more than a good joke or passing statement. It is reality!

Our families, our households and our lives would not hold together without you moms!

You're not just the glue holding us together, you're like a perfect weld bonding 2 pieces of metal together. Not only do you keep them together, your "glue" or "welding" is stronger than the metal, than us and we need you to.

You Complete Us! 😍

Not only is the above true, but amidst the Covid crisis chaos we see it even more clearly. You're a teacher, a cook, a blossoming baker, a house cleaner, a care taker, an employed working class lady and so much more. You are doing a gazillion things every day and nearly every moment.

Speaking from the dad's perspective, things would have fallen apart week 1 of the Covid chaos if mom hadn't been holding things together!

THANK YOU‼️❤️🙏🏼

Because of the corona virus we've gained a deeper appreciation for how important family is and how precious our very lives are. Each passing moment has taken on a whole new importance and we're not so easily distracted from these moments and memories. We're doing more, reaching out more, going outside of ourselves and into the lives of those around us.

We're acting like mom's and getting a real appreciation for what it is to care for others before ourselves.

Mom's act in love to those around them, care for them and pay attention to opportunities with them. Mom's care about the memories, the moments making the memories and those in the memories. They're usually the ones capturing the memories on their phones or cameras and this is why they're seldom in captured in the memories.

Be You!

April 23, 2020  •  3 Comments

The Way To Be, Is To Be YOU! 😁

Recently, we had the blessing of capturing a few DriveByShootings (Porch Portraits from my vehicle).😉 Until the fun got shut down because of the Stay Home mandate. But, during this time one family made a decision. A decision which impacted me and is still impacting the way I see things.

"I don’t know if we can be so creative... I’ll see what we can think of! Might have to be boring. But I’ll try"

Amanda sent the above statement in a message to us. She was seeking our help in capturing her family in a DriveByShooting/Porch Portrait. However, little did she know her little statement would be the 1st domino to fall in a whole line of my mental dominos. Then, she said this! 😲

"We’re looking forward to it. I decided we’re just going to be in our “normal” clothes just the way we are."

This simple statement rocked my mental capacities!!! It caused me to step back, acknowledge her desire and celebrate the family's decision to BE REAL to who they are.

Amanda was helping me to see once again the WHY behind my passion for portraits and the WHY I love photographing families!

The Way To Be, Is To Be YOU! 😁

timmydphotography - Enumclaw portrait photographerDriveByShootingsTimothy Dehnert Photography is an Enumclaw portrait photography company.

Our lives are so unique and needed in this world. Not to mention how necessary they are in the lives of friends and families.

The way to be, is to be you and you make a difference!

Being forced to slow down during the Covid-19 quarantines should help us to stop and look at how much time we spent chasing the dreams and lifestyles of others. As we're forced to seclude ourselves we might see and appreciate how great it is to be exactly who God made us to be. To be just as we are and not strive to be others!

Here's some context!

Once Amanda asked about doing the DriveBy I began trying to help her prepare for the shootings by suggesting helpful tips and preps.

  • What time of day would be best according to light.
  • What the area looks like and how they'd like it to look.
  • What they might do in the portrait.
  • What they might wear in the portrait.

Then I sent her a few examples of DriveBy's we'd already done to help her get some ideas. I included the portrait of our family to see if she'd like to get a little crazy.

timmydphotography - Enumclaw PhotographerDriveByShootings - Dehnert FamilyTimothy Dehnert Photography is a portrait photographer in Enumclaw, WA

She saw the examples and didn't think they'd fit the bill and I'm SO GLAD they didn't try to!

Our family, senior, couple or any other genre of portraits are to capture WHO YOU ARE! Not who we want you to be.

This is why we have mandatory consultation meetings prior to any portrait sessions.

We want to learn about who you are, what you enjoy doing and what other things define you and your character. We make a big effort to get to know you and build a genuine relationship with you. Not only to create beautiful portraits, but beautiful portraits painting an accurate picture of those we're photographing.

We'll help you hone this view into something memorable and lasting,

but we DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE who you are!

Coronavirus - What To Do If You Do Get It??

I saw a post on this earlier and wanted to share. I haven't seen much of anything posted on what to do if you have Coronavirus or think you may have it. I've seen plenty articles on what it is and yes this is important. Knowing the enemy is a very large part of the battle. Now,

  • WHAT DO WE DO IF...?
  • HOW DO WE DEFEAT THE BEAST?
  • WHAT IS OUR STRATEGY FOR PREVENTION AND HEALING?

1st, let's take a deep breath. From all I've heard and read, one major part we cannot forget is to think of others! Let's not run all over each other in a panic to save ourselves. This is scary enough (especially for those who need the help and and are more vulnerable) and we don't need to be fighting each other too. Let's make an attempt to put others 1st, stay proactive with our focus on this horrible event and strive to share helpful info like the following. I copied this from a post on friends timeline and I'm not saying this is 100% true, but it's the best I've seen on counter measures for anyone who thinks they may be infected or for those that want to prevent becoming infected. I hope this is something to help calm some nerves, bring you a tangible set of things you can do and will bring some encouragement in such a trying and scary time! 😊

  • What we've been doing for weeks now as a counter measure is - Hot Apple Cider Vinegar Tea - We've made up our own recipe for smaller portions (1 cup water; 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar; 1 teaspoon honey; dash of lemon juice). But here's a great recipe to check out - apple-cider-vinegar-tea/

As an intro into the section I wanted to share we want you to know this,

You ARE NOT ALONE!

This isolation and containment has a real effect of making us feel - alone! You're not! If you need ANY help. We would love to help. Need a ride, need someone to talk to or someone to go for a walk with? That sounds nice!

What happens if you DO get coronavirus?

  • "You basically just want to prepare as though you know you’re going to get a nasty respiratory bug like the flu, bronchitis or pneumonia. You just have the foresight to know it’s coming."
  • "Things you should *actually* buy ahead of time: Kleenex, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in 325 mg tablets, Ibuprofen (Advil) in 200 mg tablets, Mucinex, Robitussin or DayQuil/NyQuil, whatever your cough medicine of choice is. Also please BUY a thermometer don’t go to any ER & Drs and say I felt warm!"
  • "If you don’t have a humidifier, that would also be a good thing to get. (You can also just turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom breathing in the steam), or boil a pot of water on the stove. Also a good time to make a big batch of your favorite soup to freeze and have on hand." All of these have been great recipes for helping with a bed cold, cough and congestion. Why not now!? Plus, they sound super relaxing and such a tense time.
  • "If you have a history of asthma and you have a prescription inhaler, make sure the one you have isn’t expired and refill it/get a new one if it is. Refill all of your needed medications, early if you can."
  • "For symptom management, use the meds mentioned. For a fever over 101, alternate Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin every 6 hours so you’re taking a dose of one or the other every 2-3 hours. Can be taken at the same time also! Use both cough suppressants and expectorants (most cough meds have both). Drink a ton, hydrate hydrate. Rest lots. Please take meds before rushing to ER, urgent care or DR office. Recheck temp in 1 hour to see if the meds helped."
  • "If you're sick, you should not be leaving your house except to go to the doctor (call ahead first), and if you do, wear a mask (regular is fine, you don’t need an N95). You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE ER unless you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high and unmanaged with meds. ER are for life threatening illnesses."
  • "90% of healthy adult cases thus far have been managed at home with basic rest/hydration/over-the-counter meds. We don’t want to clog the ERs unless you’re actually in distress. The hospital beds will be used for people who actively need oxygen/breathing treatments/IV fluids."
  • "If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your PCP or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick. They might have plans to get you admitted and bypass the ER entirely."
  • — they usually bounce back in a few days, no one under 18 has died, and almost no kids have required hospitalization (unless they have a lung disease like CF).One major relief to you parents is that kids do VERY well with coronavirus"
  • Just use pediatric dosing of the same meds. Buy them now if you do not already have them on hand."
